The National Trans Visibility March Stands in Solidarity Against Racism and Police Brutality

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd was killed by police in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was killed in broad daylight while onlookers pleaded on his behalf, as he yelled ‘I Can’t Breathe’. On May 27, 2020, Tony McDade was killed by police in Tallahassee, FL. George Floyd and Tony McDade are two people in a long list of unarmed Black people who have been killed by the police.

countless other innocent Black lives

Since 2015 at least 1,252 Black people have been shot and killed by police. The band-aid that has tried to normalize police brutality and racism has been ripped off and the wounds from inequality and prejudices are deep. Systemic racism has continued to plague our society and has caused increasing disparities that affect all areas of the Black community from education to home ownership.

The National Trans Visibility March stands with the Black community and in solidarity against anti-Blackness, racism, and police brutality in America. We agree that this ongoing issue has been swept under the rug for far too long and the time for action is now. Unfortunately, due to the lack of leadership in the White House instead of receiving words that will calm tensions, divisive comments have been made to further divide our nation. We believe the current political climate is not conducive to equality for all, therefore, we will support our community in exercising their right to vote in their own interests during this year’s election.

The National Trans Visibility March denounces hatred and bigotry in all forms. At this time we feel it is important to acknowledge the pain that Black people in America are feeling. Instead of having week-long Virtual Community Pride events, June 6-12, we will be focusing on providing resources and information that will continue the conversation and action that has begun. On June 13th, we will host a virtual conversation with BIPOC LGBTQ leaders and honor those on the ground fighting for change during the 2020 Torch Awards broadcast. We will end with performances and virtual contributions by various LGBTQ community members.

It has always been time for a revolution and we are ready to support our community while we fight together for equality! All Black Lives Matter!
