Funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act—commonly referred to as the federal stimulus that President Obama signed in February 2009—will go to developing an HIV prevention program for young, heterosexual Latino couples, Health News reports.
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) awarded a two-year grant to David Perez-Jimenez, PhD, at the University of Puerto Rico.
“Our plan is to use Recovery Act funds not only to support meritorious proposals that were previously out of reach, but to supplement current efforts, expediting progress towards our goal of profoundly reducing HIV infection,” said Thomas R. Insel, MD, the NIMH director.
The study will research possible modifications to an existing HIV prevention program that also focuses on other sexually transmitted infections.
