Jamaican Officials Reject HIV Poster Woman
Government-funded posters, billboards and flyers featuring HIV-positive AIDS awareness spokeswoman Annesha Taylor covered the streets of Kingston, Jamaica, in early 2007—until she became pregnant less than a year after her campaign launched and was reassigned within the Ministry of Health, according to a profile in the Washington Post (washingtonpost.com, 6/8).
In the profile, Taylor alleges that the health ministry was uncomfortable having a pregnant, unmarried spokeswoman for abstinence and responsible sexual practices. Taylor, 27, said that a defective condom caused her pregnancy, but added that her supervisors “just don’t buy it.” She said, “They believe I was practicing unprotected sex.”
Taylor told the Post that she believes there would be no issue within the ministry if she and the baby’s father were married.
