Nutritious (and Cheap!) Foods Can Feed Both Hair and Body

Not only can do-it-yourself, kitchen-made hair treatments bless you with healthy-looking hair, they can also give your wallet a break. These natural hair care recipes from Livestrong.com promise to be just as effective as getting your locks done at an expensive salon—all without leaving the comfort of your home.

Boost Shine and Volume

Combine 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 2 cups of warm water. Pour mixture over freshly shampooed hair. The rinse restores hair’s balance, adds shine and strengthens fine hair.

Get Rid of Product Buildup

Mix 1 cup of vinegar and 2 tablespoons of dry rosemary in a microwave-safe bowl. Warm the mixture in the microwave for 1 minute and 30 seconds. Crush the rosemary on the side of the bowl with a spoon (to release the scent). Strain mixture and apply to hair after shampooing. Leave on for 2 minutes and rinse with cool water. This herbal concoction removes shampoo residue that can weigh hair down and make it appear lifeless.

Quench Your Dry Hair

Make a hot oil treatment using ¼ cup of canola oil or soybean oil in a glass measuring cup. Place the cup in a bowl of hot water to warm it. Spread the warm oil through your hair and leave it on for 2 minutes. Wash out thoroughly. Livestrong.com says this will leave your hair softer and shinier.

Tame the Frizz

Mix 4 tablespoons of plain yogurt (not low fat) and one egg. (Note: Fuggedaboutit if you’re allergic to eggs.) After shampooing, pour the mixture onto your head and massage into hair from root to tip. Leave on for 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse out with cool water only (or risk cooked egg in your hair). This conditioner softens dry hair and prevents flyways and frizzy strands.
