Latino children and teens have the fastest growing rate ofdiabetes, more than any other ethnic group in the United States, according to astudy released by the American Diabetes Association and reported by NBC Latino.

There are two kinds of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. Type 1diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes, accounts for five to 10 percent ofall diagnosed cases of diabetes and happens when the body’s immune systemattacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes, also known asadult-onset diabetes, accounts for 90 to 95 percent of all diagnosed cases ofdiabetes. Until recently, type 2 diabetes usually developed in adults olderthan 40. However, researchers are now finding that it’s no longer thecase.
