A new study conducted by researchers from Penn State University (and funded by the National Honey Board) found that buckwheat honey could soothe children’s coughs better than over-the-counter cough suppressants. A spoonful of the stuff was found to be more effective than the common cough suppressant DM (dextromethorphan) in helping kids suffering from upper respiratory tract infection sleep better throughout the night. However, the researchers emphasize honey isn’t meant for kids under 1 year old—nor is it a substitute for calling your doctor if your child is sick.
