An Overstressed America

One-third of Americans are living with extreme stress, suggests a national survey conducted by the American Psychological Association (APA). The survey’s data also found that the biggest stressors were money and work, along with housing costs such as mortgages and rent.  Nearly 50 percent said that stress keeps them up at night and 70 percent admitted to having physical and psychological responses to stress such as headaches, muscle tension, lack of energy and irritability.  Only 23 percent claimed to be managing stress extremely well.

Russ Newman, MD., the executive director of APA, told the press, “Stress in America continues to escalate and affects every aspect of people’s lives—from work to personal relationships to sleep patterns and eating habits, as well as their health.”
